What is an exposure index?
The exposure index is a formulation derived from the Regulation of the Polish Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy of June 29, 2016, on occupational health and safety during work involving exposure to electromagnetic fields (source, Polish). It applies to employees and other persons performing work on facilities exposed to EM fields within protective zones (intermediate, hazardous, or dangerous).
According to point 8, sub-point 8) of Annex 3 to the aforementioned regulation, controlled exposure within the EM field protective zones is conditionally permissible if the working conditions ensure that daily exposure is temporary. The temporary nature of exposure is defined in Part III of the aforementioned Annex – in accordance with point 1, sub-point 6) “Temporary exposure – exposure to EM fields during which the exposure index does not exceed a value of one (W<1);”.
The EMVO Safety app continuously updates the user’s personal exposure index by recording their position, based on an interpolated electromagnetic field strength value determined from accredited occupational health and safety measurements performed at a given facility. The app ensures compliance with the requirements of the aforementioned regulation in demonstrating the temporary nature of the user’s EM fields exposure. It also indicates the remaining time left for the user to remain safely on the facility.
